3 Questions to Ask God During Times of Uncertainty

Have you ever asked yourself the question. “God, What is going on right now?”

I am talking about times when everything seems haywire.

The times when life knocks the breath out of your lungs.

.

For me, these were…

Times when I was heading out of College to ministry school — running in the face of an unknown life.

Times when I thought I’d lose a family member to an illness.

Times when a massive fight in my family was normal, and pain was common.

Times where I would pray day and night for clarity on what to do during College.

Time when I felt alone and without community, family, or friendship.

Times when all I could do was cry out to God for help to pay rent because I left everything I knew to be normal because He called me elsewhere…

There are times in our lives when we need to know God is close. There are times when the future seems uncertain, and we don’t necessarily need to know and understand everything that is in front of us… Yet..

Yet we desperately need to know that there is a God who relentlessly pursues us.

Here are three questions that have carried me through and have fed my soul as I waited on God:

1. God, I feel like (Fill in the Blank), but what is your opinion about this situation?

It cam be easy to recognize when you’re believing a lie about life. Just look at your emotions. Are you being controlled by fear, regret, worry, doubt in God’s goodness, and stressed out?

Those are the moments where I take a step back and talk to God. I desperately need to understand His thoughts when I felt Him call me to a different place in the USA and I have no money for rent. I need his perspective when I am hurt by an argument with a close loved one. I need to see as He sees.

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. — 1 John 3:2

Let’s seek to know God and see reality as it is.

2. God, What should I be focusing on right now, in this season?

There are times when my true joy has been stolen because my attention was on what I needed. There are moments where we need to stand on what God said over our situation and quit the worry game.

Worry is a terrible way to muster faith in your life, and sometimes God is working on something with me that I haven’t let go.

False security is one of those things that has to be worked out.

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?…But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. — Matthew 6:27, 33–34

3. God, Who do you say that I am?

Before my feet touch the floor to start the day, sometimes I just ask the question, “Who do you say that I am? What are your thoughts of me?” I can’t express how life changing this has been for me. I have woken up some mornings in complete fear or anxiety.

Sometimes they were the residue of a though the night before, and sometimes they are random.

It’s these moments, I ask this powerful question: “God, who do you say that I am? How do you feel about how I’ve stewarded what you’ve given me? Is there anything I need to change?” I’ve found that this question pushes back anxiety when I need to trust that His timing is perfect.

And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” -Matthew 3:17

Life brings it’s own set of uncertainty. It has rules that aren’t always fair. We all have had to navigate difficult seasons of loss.

But God is looking to comfort us and draw close. He is looking to turn our faces up. It’s been my experience that turning my pain in the form of open hands outstretched towards God has formed roots in my ecosystem that are rooted in rock.

The embrace of my father never gives up, never quits.

I am safe and secure in who God is. He has shown Himself true and trustworthy to me.

I hope you will know Him to be the same to you.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. — Phillipians 4:8–9
